In the early 1980s, Dantley was the Utah Jazz. For seven years, a career for many players, he led the team out from the NBA cellar and obscurity and into the playoffs. Dantley was acquired by the Jazz in time for its inaugural season in Utah and quickly became a crowd favorite. That year, 1979-80, he led the team (or tied for the lead) in 11 statistical categories.

During his prolific career as a Jazzman, Dantley was a six-time All-Star (missing only the 1982 team because of injury) and was voted to the starting team five of those six years. Wearing the purple, green and gold, he won two NBA scoring championships (1981, 1984), averaged 30 points per game (ppg) or better four times, was named NBA Comeback Player of the Year (1984) and was named to the All-NBA Team twice. Dantley recorded a 29.6 ppg career scoring average with the Jazz and a .562 percent field goal average -- both rank as the highest in franchise history. He's third on the team's all-time scoring list -- behind Karl Malone and John Stockton -- and ranks in the top five for games/minutes played, steals, free throw attempted/made, rebounds and assists.
